Since 2002 the Chair of General Linguistics has offered a course of Comparative Linguistics as one of its three teaching and research areas. We invite students of St. Petersburg State University in their 2ndor 3rd year to obtain an additional speciality to their basic course (preferably students of humanities).
Before officially joining the Chair in 2002, the Indo-European studies had for thirty years been an optional course for students run by L. G. Hertzenberg. At present the programme has over twenty listeners distributed over a three-year span. The courses of lectures and seminars are run by professors of the Chair of General Linguistics (St. Petersburg University) and the Institute for Linguistic Studies (Russian Academy of Science). New students enrol every year.
In 2004 the Chair introduced a Masters programme “Indo-European Historical Linguistics” with admission open to anyone with a Bachelor degree from a Russian, European or American university.
The courses provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the comparative-historical method and theory. Participation in the respective workshops will help extend knowledge of theory and enable students to do research on particular Indo-European languages, including the classical languages.
